MAKING ENDS MEET (M.E.M)
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: A man asked the Prophet , "What sort of deeds or (what
qualities of) Islam are good?" The Prophet replied, 'To feed (the poor) and greet
those whom you know and those whom you do not Know (See Hadith No. 27). (Book #2,
Hadith #11)
The concept of Making Ends Meet (M.E.M) originated from the caring nature of Imam L. Fatihah Mateen, the first Resident Imam of Al-Ummil Ummat Islamic Center. He would plant a garden on the masjid property and distribute the vegetables amongst those in need within the community as well as to those passing by asking for food. In 1997, he planted his last garden and left an abundance of fresh vegetables that fed those in need for several month after his passing.
In 1989, Brother Ali Akbar gave the program its name and encouraged Sister Huetta Mateen to file the necessary documents to establish the organization 501C(3) nonprofit status and to acquire shopping privileges from Second Harvest Food Bank of NWNC in Winston-Salem, NC.
M.E.M has since adopted several low-income housing developments to deliver food and non-perishable items to many senior citizens, single parents and disabled individuals.
What makes M.E.M an exceptionally outstanding program is their street delivery service, which is ran by community volunteers.

Your tax-deductible donation is accepted. Funds are used to purchase food and non-perishable items for donating food to those in need in our communities. Send your donation today to: Al-Ummil Ummat, 2109 Martin Luther King Dr., Greensboro, NC 27406, Attn: Making Ends Meet.
